WHY STUDY NORs ?

NORs play an important role in different fields :

  • Environmental Role → N2O is a major greenhouse gas and an ozone depleting gas that is 310 times more harmful then CO2. N2O is mainly produced by NOR catalysed reactions making their study essential to potentially prevent its formation and accumulation.
  • Medicinal Role → Nitric oxide (NO) can be used by macrophages as a weapon against infectious molecules . Some pathogenic bacterias use NOR as a defence against the immune system by neutralising the highly toxic NO produced by the macrophages. Study of this process might elucidate improved treatment options for patients.
